Call for Proposals 2018

Research grants for Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Care4BrittleBones is an international foundation based in the Netherlands. Our goal is to promote scientific research into Osteogenesis Imperfecta with the intention of improving the quality of life of people with OI. To achieve our objective, we work on strategic and international level to drive better patient outcomes. We are engaged in research strategy discussions, provide operational support to research projects, fund research projects with support of our OI Community network and we work with researchers, healthcare providers and OI patient organisations around the globe to think and act together for the benefit of people with OI. We raise funds in various ways, including OI community fundraising, trust funds and public subsidies. In 2017 we have allocated ca. €400.000 to new Research projects for OI, ranging between €10.000 and €180.000 for a single grant.

Aim: The aim of this call is to (co-) fund projects that have a potential to improve the quality of life for people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) in the short-, mid- or long term.

Scope: A wide range of treatment or research strategies will be considered. All disciplines that contribute to the well-being of people with OI are invited to join. Creation of alliances and partnerships across national boundaries and medical institutions are explicitly welcomed.

Geographical focus: Global. Principal Investigators may come from any country.

Assessment Criteria and Process:

Applications for grants will be assessed against the following criteria:

  1. Impact to the quality of life of people with OI;
  2. Impact beyond the local level (e.g. through knowledge transfer and international collaboration)
  3. Clarity of the objective and target group of the research;
  4. Necessity/relevance of the topic (what will be different because of this research);
  5. Efficiency and control (project plan, budget, healthy balance investment and expected outcome);
  6. Patient involvement in the project / Support from national OI Patient Organisation
  7. Fit with the core values of Care4BrittleBones: Positive + Inspiring + Innovative.

The applications will be evaluated by two Advisory Boards, which include professionals of various disciplines relevant to OI, as well as people with OI. The decision of Care4BrittleBones will be based on the advice of the Advisory Boards and is final.

Grants: We will issue one or several grants. Co-funding from other sources is strongly encouraged and is considered an advantage in the selection process. The proposal(s) selected by the Advisory Boards will be promoted towards various potential sources of funding in our network during a period of about 6 months. Depending on the success of finding funding from other sources, Care4BrittleBones will fund all or the remainder of the amount from existing funds. A standard contract will be used to agree details of the funding arrangement, including timing of payments.

Individual grants may range between €10.000 and €200.000. In exceptional cases higher grants may be considered. Max. duration of the research is 2 years.
